Standing at 14 points after 13 games and still in the playoffs contention ahead of the last weekend of the league phase in Indian Premier League 2023, it is fair to say that Mumbai Indians have overachieved in the IPL 2023 given their bowling attack.
With no Bumrah and Jhye Richardson, and Jofra Archer who came and struggled with an injury, Piyush Chawla, who was not picked in Indian Premier League 2023, leading their spin attack and other youngsters given big responsibilities, MI have found heroes as they have gone along and remained alive in the playoff race.
There have also been a couple of major, big names who have been flops.
Here are 2 biggest flops of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023:
Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer’s debut IPL season for the Paltans has not gone according to the desires of the fast bowler and the franchise. Still troubled by the elbow injury, Archer featured in 5 matches, picking up only 2 wickets and leaking runs at an economy of 9.5. He returned home ahead of the business end of the tournament as his elbow issue continued to trouble him.
It is fair to say Archer has been one of the most disappointing players in Indian Premier League 2023.
Rohit Sharma
The Mumbai Indians captain has had another disappointing IPL season. In fact, Rohit Sharma has been underwhelming as a batsman in the past few years. He’s not averaged over 30 since 2017 and not had a strike rate of over 135 since 2016.
He had an average of 19.14 last season with no half-century, and now, in Indian Premier League 2023, in 13 games, he has an average of 19.76 with one half-century and a league match to go. Match-winning performances have been rare from MI Skipper’s bat since last season in the IPL.
Given his retention price, his big name, and his being the captain, Sharma has been a big flop for MI in the batting department in IPL 2023.
