Yashasvi Jaiswal became the 17th Indian to hit a century on his Test debut, and only the third Indian opener to do so after Shikhar Dhawan (2013 vs Australia) and Prithvi Shaw (2018 vs WI). Jaiswal’s opening partner in this game, Rohit Sharma, also had registered a century on his debut, in 2013 vs WI, but Rohit didn’t open on his Test debut.
India have now had 4 consecutive batters from Mumbai scoring a Test-debut hundred, with Rohit, Shaw, and Shreyas Iyer the three before Jaiswal.
Youngest centurions on Test debut for India
At age 21 years and 196 days, Jaiswal is the 4th youngest Indian Test-debut centurion. Prithvi Shaw holds the record, having scored his Test-debut century aged 18 years and 239 days. Abbas Ali Baig (20y 126d) and Gundappa Viswanath (20y 276d) are 2nd and 3rd respectively on this list.
Jaiswal ends India’s 22-year wait
Scoring a Test-debut century is in itself a big deal; scoring it away from home, and for an Asian batsman to do it outside Asia is seen with massive respect and is a testament to the quality of the batsman.
Yashasvi Jaiswal ended India’s 22-year wait for a debutant to hit a Test-debut century outside Asia. Of the 16 Indians to amass a hundred on Test debut before Jaiswal, only 5 did it outside Asia, with Virender Sehwag the last to do so, in Bloemfontein back in November 2001. Jaiswal now is on the footsteps of Sehwag already.
Most balls faced by an Indian in debut Test innings
350 balls faced by Jaiswal by stumps on the second day are the most by an Indian in an innings on Test debut. The previous highest was 322 by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1984 during his 110 against England at Eden Gardens.
Opening partnership records
In reply to West Indies’ first innings total of 150, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal forged a massive opening stand of 229 runs, which is now India’s highest opening partnership in Tests outside Asia and the highest opening partnership for India vs West Indies. The previous highest was 213 between Chetan Chauhan and Sunil Gavaskar at The Oval in 1979.
