The IPL 2023 is going in full flow and the high-scoring matches have kept the fans entertained while the nail-biters have kept them hooked. As the tournament has gone past the halfway mark, some of the Indian uncapped players have performed brilliantly for their franchises.
As always, good shows in the Indian Premier League can lead to a call-up to India‘s T20I team later in the year for these youngsters. With the focus on ODIs this year, some of the multi-format players could get rested from the T20Is, making way for these impressive players.
Here are 5 players who have performed well in IPL 2023 and might be selected for India’s T20I team:
Yashasvi Jaiswal
The 21-year-old prodigy is showing signs of promise and Rajasthan Royals are yielding profits of backing a young Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-hander has been in terrific touch in 2023 and has been owning the powerplays with his aggressive and classy stroke play.
He’s currently the leading run-scorer for the Royals, ahead of even Buttler and Samson, with 304 runs at an average of 38 and strike rate of 147. Jaiswal has cracked 3 fifties.
Tushar Deshpande
From being trolled and mocked even by his own CSK fans in the first couple of matches of the Indian Premier League 2023, Deshpande’s rise in the Purple Cap race has been nothing but dreamy. The new leader of CSK’s pace attack in the absence of the injured Chahar and Jamieson, Deshpande is currently sitting with 14 wickets – the joint-highest at the time of writing – in 8 matches. Though the economy of 10.9 need improvement, Deshpande has made marked improvements throughout the season so far.
Rinku Singh
The Indian T20I team currently lacks finisher with Rishabh Pant injured, Dinesh Karthik dropped and Hardik Pandya turning into an anchor. This perhaps will open the doors for Rinku Singh to get a maiden call-up to Team India after the IPL.
His heroics of 5 sixes in 5 balls against Yash Dayal are now part of IPL folklore. He’s been belligerent in the death overs: in the IPL 2023, Rinku Singh has a strike rate of 200 in the death overs. Overall so far in 8 matches, the left-hander averages 54 with a strike rate of 151.
Tilak Varma
At the end of the IPL 2022, Rohit Sharma had said that Varma will be soon playing all three formats for India. Perhaps it is time he makes his debut in the T20I format. For, the young left-hander has rarely put a foot wrong since his debut for Mumbai Indians last year.
While in IPL 2022, Varma scored 397 runs, this season, he’s scored 219 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 154. 20-year-old Varma has impressed everyone with his temperament the most in bailing MI out of trouble time and again. His left-handedness further makes his case strong.
Vijay Shankar
There is something that Vijay Shankar has done right between IPL 2022 and IPL 2023. While last season, he barely managed to hit the ball off the square, averaging just 4.75 in 4 knocks, he’s turned into his prime mode this season, averaging 49 in 6 innings and striking at 165. Both of his fifties have made significant contributions to Gujarat Titans’ two victories.
Could there be a recall on the cards for the 32-year-old Vijay Shankar, who last played for India back in 2019?
