Former world No. 3 Sloane Stephens proved far too strong for Olivia Gadecki, defeating the Australian wildcard 6-3, 6-1 in just 56 minutes on John Cain Arena.
Stephens, a former US Open champion, wins her way into the second round of Australia’s major tournament for the first time since 2019, where she’ll play 14th seed Daria Kasatkina after her win over Peyton Stearns.
Gadecki made a strong start winning the opening two games of the match, but from there her more experienced American opponent took complete control.

It was a slow start for wildcard McCabe, losing four straight games in the first set against USA’s 19-year-old Michelsen, and dropping the first set in a tiebreak.
The match continued as a tight exchange, with the American proving too strong, securing his round two spot with a 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory, in two hours and 55 minutes.
