Laura Siegemund (GER) def. by Storm Hunter (AUS) (Q)
Deviating from her mixed doubles success, Hunter showcased some brilliant individual tennis against Germany’s Laura Seigemund to secure herself a round three Australian Open berth 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
It was a magnificent performance from the 29-year-old who had to fend off a late charge from the German. Hunter reaches the last 32 at a major for the first time in her career. And with it, a guaranteed AU$255,000!
Meanwhile in his post-match press conference, fellow Australian Alex De Minaur expressed his hope that Storm take confidence from this success and continues to grow in her singles game.

Christopher O’Connell (AUS) def. by Ben Shelton (USA) [16]
Christopher O’Connell would have lost no fans after a lion-hearted effort against rising American star Ben Shelton. The 16th seed, and quarterfinalist from last year, got the job done in four entertaining sets — 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) — on John Cain Arena.
You have to admire O’Connell’s spirit. The Aussie staved off four match points before Shelton converted on his fifth opportunity.
