Sri Lanka suffered a heartbreaking loss to India in the final of the Asia Cup. Shaking off the disappointment, the Islanders will now put their focus on the ICC ODI World Cup, beginning on October 8 on Indian soil. Before going into the main event, Sri Lanka faced off against fellow Asian side Bangladesh for a warm-up match and endured a seven-wicket defeat. They will try to bounce back in the second practice game against Afghanistan and enter the World Cup on the back of victory. The warm-up match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will be played at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on October 3.
Sri Lanka was outclassed by Bangladesh in every aspect in the last match. Batting first, Sri Lanka could produce only 263 runs, losing all wickets in 49.1 overs. Though it looked like a defendable total, the Lankan bowlers failed in the task, with the Bangladesh top order putting up a dominant show. Only three bowlers from Sri Lanka– Lahiru Kumara, Dunith Wellalage and Dushan Hemantha– could achieve success, scalping one wicket each. Bangladesh comfortably chased down the target with eight overs to spare. Meanwhile, Afghanistan missed out on their opening warm-up match. The fixture against South Africa was washed out due to rain.
