The 25-year-old Frenchman, Ugo Humbert picked up his second title of the season and sixth of his career to maintains his record of never losing a final on the ATP Tour!
He is not easy to play against. He had some opportunities to break me, but I was really calm and knew exactly what I had to do Ugo Humbert
His latest triumph came at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, an ATP 500 level event, when he beat the Kazak Alexander Bublik 6-4 6-3.
“I played a fantastic level during the whole week. Today was not easy… I really don’t know, but I have a good statistic,” Humbert said when his 6-0 record in finals was pointed out to him. “I have a really good team around me.”
From the opening shots Humbert adopted an aggressive attacking game off the baseline, using his forehand to dictate play and forcing Bublik back, deep in his own court.
He hit 27 winners as he strode to his straight sets victory in 85-minutes, fending off a break point when serving for the title, which he pocketed on his second match point.
He is the third Frenchman to win the title after Jerome Golmard (1999) and Fabrice Santoro (2002).
“He is not easy to play against. He had some opportunities to break me, but I was really calm and knew exactly what I had to do,” Humbert, who now has a 15-3 record for the season, added.
Humbert, the fifth seed ranked 18 at the start of the week, defeated the defending champion and world No.4 Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, should improve his ranking to a career-high 14 when the new listings are published on Monday.
Earlier this season, Humbert clinched the trophy on home soil in Marseille and is now the highest ranked player in France.
Disappointment for the 26-year-old Bublik who was hoping to pick up his second title of the season after winning Montpellier last month but his run this week will be rewarded in ranking terms as he is expected to break into the top 20 on Monday for the first time in his career..
