Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is strongly championing for uncapped batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal to play all three formats for India given his success in domestic cricket and in the IPL over the past 2-3 years.
Jaiswal took the IPL 2023 by storm and had his best IPL tournament: he finished as the 5th highest run-scorer with 625 runs at an average of 48 and strike rate of 163 with 1 century and 5 fifties, including setting the record of a 13-ball half-century vs KKR.
Before this thunderous IPL 2023 season, Jaiswal had been in rollicking form in domestic cricket and has had a dream start to his first-class career: 21-year-old Jaiswal has ransacked 1845 runs at a terrific average of 80 and strike rate of 67 in 15 first-class matches with the highest score of 265!
In 32 List-A matches, the southpaw averages 53 with 5 centuries and 7 fifties.
Looking at these numbers, his talent and class, Gautam Gambhir measures Yashasvi Jaiswal to be a future superstar for India in all 3 formats
“Yashasvi Jaiswal hasn’t just done well in IPL; he has scored a 200 in domestic cricket and he has a triple century. He has scored a 200 in the Vijay Hazare trophy. What he has done in IPL is just icing on the cake. That’s why, Yashasvi should be there in all three formats,” Gautam Gambhir told News18 recently.
Last year, in the shadow tour of India A against Bangladesh A, Jaiswal cracked a brilliant century on a tough pitch.
Part of Gambhir’s wish might come true soon as it has been reported that the selectors have decided to include star opener for the West Indies tour next month, and that he could make his Test debut, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara at number 3.
Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer shared similar sentiments to Gautam Gambhir about Jaiswal to make his debut for India.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is definitely one of them. He has been a very prolific scorer across formats, whether you talk about the IPL, domestic cricket or India A cricket. I think he needs to be a part of the squad,” Wasim Jaffer was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
