Having bagged the Asia Cup last month, India are now set to kick off their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia. The Men in Blue displayed some dominant performances in Sri Lanka, as they eased past the Super Four stage to book a spot in the 2023 Asia Cup final. Ahead of their opening fixture against Australia, India captain Rohit Sharma will be forced to take a late call on Shubman Gill’s fitness as the opener has been battling illness.
A phenomenal six-wicket haul from Mohammed Siraj helped India side seal a dominant victory against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. Following the continental triumph, India won another ODI series 2-1 at home against Australia. Despite missing the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the first two matches, a KL Rahul-led India picked up an early 2-0 lead in the series. However, Glenn Maxwell scalped four Indian batters in the third ODI game to help the Australian side to a 66-run victory.

India will be taking on Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, on October 8. Australia have struggled in their recent ODI series. Despite leading the tally 2-0, Australia faltered in the final three games in the South Africa series. They were also beaten by India 2-1 in a three-match ODI tour against the World Cup hosts. The Aussies have a good opportunity of redeeming themselves against India in their opening World Cup fixture.
