Virat Kohli missed his 49th ODI century by only 12 runs when he got out for 88 runs against Sri Lanka in the match on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium.
Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar also was present at the venue to watch the game and spoke in the mid-innings break with broadcaster Star Sports about Kohli missing out on a century, and the 34-year-old nearing his record of 49 ODI centuries.
Virat Kohli is just one century away from equalling Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds. He had a great chance to achieve this record today, but missed it by only 12 runs.
When the host joked with Sachin Tendulkar that his record is safe for a few more days, Tendulkar gave a heart-winning reply, saying that his record is India’s record, and that he would be very happy if it stays with India.
“The 49 ODI hundreds record is not my record, it’s India’s record. As long as it stays with India, I am happy,” Sachin Tendulkar said on Virat Kohli nearing his 49 ODI centuries record.
This reply from Tendulkar once again showed his passion and commitment toward his country.
Back in 2013, Tendulkar had predicted that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the ones he sees as youngsters who could break his record. Rohit recently broke Tendulkar’s record of 6 centuries in ODI World Cup and now Kohli stands just one century away from his 49 ODI hundreds record.
Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer all miss centuries; India pile up 357 vs Sri Lanka
Meanwhile, India have piled up 357 runs against Sri Lanka on the back of half-centuries from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer. All three players looked set for their respective hundreds, but all three misses the landmark.
Gill got out for 92, Kohli on 88, and Iyer on 82. India dominated the proceedings with the bat at the Wankhede stadium to amass a big total. A win today for the hosts will seal their place in the semi-final.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first.
