Akash Madhwal starred for the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator on Wednesday against Lucknow Super Giants, returning with stunning figures of 5/5 that helped MI down LSG by a whopping 81 runs at the Chepauk.
Mumbai Indians will next face the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, the Titans standing in the way of another MI vs CSK final.
Speaking of Akash Madhwal, the uncapped pacer from Roorkee has taken on the job of middle-overs and death-overs bowling spectacularly in the absence of both Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer.
Akash Madhwal now has snapped up 13 wickets in 7 matches at a terrific economy of 7.76. His been brilliant with his hard lengths and at hitting the stumps. The skiddiness in his deliveries off the surface came to fore today in the dismissals of Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran, with the seamer claiming that the wicket of the West Indian left-hander – from around the wicket angle and the ball just nipping away to take Pooran’s outside edge – being his favorite of the five wickets.
Akash Madhwal got praises and plaudits from all corners on social media today for his splendid match-winning performance in the a big game such as Eliminator.
One special praise and tweet of appreciation for Akash Madhwal came from Jasprit Bumrah
Following Mumbai’s thumping victory, Bumrah tweeted heaping rich praises for Madhwal.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Madhwal said: “I have been practicing a lot and waiting for my opportunity. I have done engineering, cricket is my passion and I have been waiting for this since 2018. When we practice in the nets, the management gives us the target and we try to execute our best. Hoping to do well in the coming games and want to end up as champions. The wicket of Nicholas Pooran was most pleasing for me.”
MI captain Rohit Sharma said: “He (Akash) was the part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra was gone and I knew he had skills and the character to do the job for us. Over the years we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (youngsters) feel special and make them feel part of the team, my job is to just make them comfortable in the middle. They are very clear in their roles about what they need to do for the team and that’s what you want.”
