Jordan Thompson, the 29-year-old Australian has secured his first title to cap an excellent week in Los Cabos when he lifted the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo trophy on Saturday.
And now I’m about to lift the trophy, so I think it’s still a miracle Jordan Thompson
The Aussie, who became a professional player in 2013, has always been a fighter providing opponents with tough matches but not until this week, has he been able to go through a draw unbeaten.
Seeded eight, Thompson beat the fourth seeded Casper Ruud 6-3 7-6(4) to finally achieve his just reward for all his work on the Tour over the past decade in what was the third final of his career.
This week he was on court for 12 hours which included just over two hours for the final in which he saw a 5-3 second lead evaporate as Ruud fought back to keep himself in contention.
Thompson eventually clinched the ATP 250 trophy with a big serve and a forehand winner on his first championship point.
“I spent so many hours on the court this week. In the quarter final I could have been double bageled, I could have been losing 6-0 6-0. And now I’m about to lift the trophy, so I think it’s still a miracle,” the Australian, world ranked at 40, said in his on-court interview referring back to the three match points he saved against Alex Michelsen.
Thompson bemused Ruud throughout the final with his variety and measured all-court approach which included short and deep slices and deft touches at the net.
In addition to his first title, Thompson also leaves Los Cabos as doubles champion having partnered countryman Max Purcel to a 7-6(1) 6-3 win over Ruud and American William Blumberg. He is the first player to do the double at an event since Nick Kyrgios (2022) in Washington.
Not surprisingly, Los Cabos is now high on Thompson’s preferred places. “My favourite place now, without a doubt,” he said of the Mexican city.
This year is proving to be a good one for him as he reached the Brisbane semis in a run which included the scalp of Rafa Nadal. He followed that up with consecutive quarter final appearances in Dallas and Delray Beach.
For Ruud it was his second loss of the season and means he will remain outside the top 10 when the new rankings are announced on Monday.
