Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif is confident that a fully-fit Indian team with all their players available has the talent, quality, and capability to win the World Cup 2023, which will be played in October-November in India.
India’s next ODI series is in West Indies, where a depleted side will tour. Indian cricket is reeling with injuries to a number of senior players – Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are among the first-choice, or almost first-choice, players who are out injured at the moment.
Mohammad Kaif picks three players to make big contributions for India to win World Cup 2023
Speaking on ‘Virtual Encounters’ on DD India, Mohammad Kaif asserted that India have a great chance to lift their third ODI World Cup trophy.
“India’s chances are quite bright because playing at home, we know the conditions better compared to other teams. Spinners might be able to play a bigger role. We have the players to win the tournament,” said Kaif.
The 42-year-old commentator emphasized the importance of having all the senior players fit in the lead-up to the tournament.
“The challenging part for India will be that you need to have all the senior players ready, fitness-wise and form-wise. Bowling should be okay I guess. If we can bat well, we will be a tough side to beat.”
Kaif added that the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Virat Kohli and fast bowler Bumrah will have to be at their best in the World Cup 2023, and then only India could win the title.
“If we talk about Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, all these senior players have to stand up and win matches. If we can add Bumrah in the squad, he has been injured for the last few months now, now they are saying he might be back for the Asia Cup, so it’s good news. I think we need Bumrah. I hope Bumrah comes back and then India will be hard to beat at home. Siraj and Shami have been doing well recently. If you add Bumrah, you will be a great bowling side,” said Kaif.
Bumrah has been out of action since last September due to a back injury. He’s expected to return to action in a couple of months for the tour of Ireland.
