A massive revelation has been learned about fast bowler Mohammed Shami. According to a report in Cricbuzz, Mohammed Shami played the World Cup 2023 with discomforting pain in his ankle.
Although Shami has been named in the Test squad for the 2 Test matches in South Africa, starting December 26, his participation is subject to fitness clearance.
Mohammed Shami finished the World Cup 2023 as the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets, helping India reach the final unbeaten.
Now, however, it’s been learned that the pacer played in the World Cup with a niggle in his ankle which caused him pain, and that has aggravated his injury, which could force him to miss the South Africa tour, though there is still about a couple of weeks before the BCCI confirms their decision.
A report in Cricbuzz said: “According to sources, Shami has been dealing with a niggle in his ankle, a concern that has persisted since the World Cup. Even though he emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup, Shami played while experiencing discomfort, particularly during landing while bowling.”
The BCCI named Mohammed Shami in their Test squad but had an asterisk beside his name.
“Mr. Mohd. Shami is currently undergoing medical treatment, and his availability is subject to fitness,” said the BCCI.
Mohammed Shami didn’t play in the first four matches of India in the World Cup. But Hardik Pandya’s injury forced India to tinker their combination and play Shami and Suryakumar. Shami was sensational, picking wickets in all but one match that he played. However, his heroics weren’t enough to help India lift the trophy.
India’s T20I and ODI squad members have departed for the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour on Wednesday, along with head coach Rahul Dravid.
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are rested from the white-ball matches, while Hardik Pandya is injured. Suryakumar Yadav will captain in the T20I series and KL Rahul will lead India in the ODIs.
