Young India and Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill, on Sunday, December 31, 2023, shared a wishlist that he had prepared for himself on December 31, 2022.
Last year, Gill had written down five resolutions/targets he wished to achieve in 2023. He achieved three of his wishlist items, however, only one – winning the World Cup – was unfulfilled.
Gill had a fantastic year as a batsman which saw him finish as the leading ODI and international run-scorer of the year. He won the Orange Cap in IPL 2023 and before the IPL 2024 auction he was named the new Gujarat Titans captain after Hardik Pandya was traded to the Mumbai Indians.
On Sunday, before the New Years, Shubman Gill posted an image of a note that he had written on December 31, 2022.
It contained five items on his wishlist:
- Most hundreds for India
- Make my family happy
- Give my best effort and be less harsh on myself
- World Cup
- Orange Cap
Shubman Gill shares his wishlist for 2023:
While Gill finished as the leading international run-scorer in 2023, he is second on the list of most hundreds this year. He hit 7 centuries while Virat Kohli hit 8 centuries, although the youngster wouldn’t mind being behind Kohli on this tally.
He did make his family proud with his achievements on the field and with his gentle, calm demeanor he has earned respect off the field as well. Gill gave his best and as much as he could: for example, despite only recovering from dengue, due to which he lost some weight, he missed only two matches at the start of the World Cup.
He won the Orange Cap in the IPL, but lost the final to CSK. Gill also couldn’t fulfill his dream of lifting the World Cup trophy.
Meanwhile, there have been questions asked on Gill’s place in the Test side. He recorded scores of 2 and 26 in the Centurion Test. After 19 Tests, Gill averages only 31, which is much lower than what is expected of his talent and class.
