Former Indian captain and ex-BCCI chairman Sourav Ganguly opened up about India’s bowling attack for the Asia Cup 2023. On Monday, the BCCI revealed its formidable 17-member squad for the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023, along with the inclusion of traveling reserve player Sanju Samson.
Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s non-exclusion from the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023 has become one of the most discussed topics on the internet.
Sourav Ganguly Made A Bold Statement After Yuzvendra Chahal’s Snub
Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav were the ones who got the nod ahead for the multi-nation tournament. While Chahar has been ignored from the marquee tournament, Prasidh Krishna was chosen as the fifth seam bowling option. This decision has left many questioning the rationale behind it.
During the press conference, BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar shed light on this decision, highlighting the insights that went into taking that decision.
“Chahal is undoubtedly a terrific performer, but we had to carefully consider the overall balance of the team. Accommodating two wrist spinners in the squad would have posed significant challenges.”
Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly was asked about Yuzvendra Chahal’s spot in the team for the Asia Cup 2023. Replying to this, Chahal said that he doesn’t know about the thinking of selectors but he’ll pick the leg-spinner. Speaking at Casagrand’s launch event in Mumbai, he explained:
“I’ll always pick Chahal. I’ll always pick wrist spinners. I don’t know what the selectors think but I’d always pick wrist spinners.”
Further, Sourav Ganguly also asked if India could pick Ravi Ashwin in the team of no off-spinner. Replying to this, Ganguly said that although he is a great bowler but as per him selectors will prefer wrist spinners over him. He said:
“Ashwin is a great bowler. [But] I think India will also look at the wrist spinners. There’s Kuldeep, there’s Chahal. Wrist spinners are very important. Once you see the team, you’ll understand which way they are thinking and I presume they’ll have the wrist spinners.”
Here’s India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023:
Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, and Sanju Samson (back up).
