Take a look at these basket fed tennis drills to improve your tactical knowledge on the court. There are many different tactical plays that you can use in a game of tennis, and here we cover some key methods to help you win more matches whatever your level. Edin Zecevic, a former professional tennis player on the ATP circuit, demostrates these 5 different drills for you. We also made sure to add a few very useful tips along the way.
Drill 1: Create space
Use the forehand to find a sharp angle and create space on the opposite side of the court. Hit your second shot either into the space, or back behind your opponent to wrong foot them.
Drill 2: Use your stregth
Run around your backhand and use the forehand for every shot. Hit the majority of forehands inside out (cross court), and use that inside in forehand on occasion too (down the line). This drill is all about using your forehand to dictate and control the point as often as possible.
Drill 3: Wide ball
Deal with the wide ball by going high and deep down the middle, or alternatively, rip it down the line. The first option aims to keep you in the points by allowing you to recover and also take away any attacking angles that your opponent can exploit. The latter option is the more satisfying of the two and is a definite crowd pleaser if you can pull it off.
Drill 4: Slice backhand
Use the slice to attack and set up the point for either the big grounstroke or the easy put away volley. Do not just use the slice on the defensive, use it to surprise your opponent when on the offensive too. It is also a shot you may want to develop for certain surfaces such as grass.
Drill 5: Serve drill
Use either your slice serve or kick serve to set up the big groudstroke into the space. Follow in with a volley. The serve is the most important shot in the game, so use it to play to your strengths and your opponents weakness.
