The IPL 2023 has just gone past its halfway stage in the league phase. RR, CSK, GT, LSG, and RCB are in the top 5 while the bottom half constitutes of PBKS, KKR, MI, SRH, and DC.
Notably, the difference between the top and bottom-placed teams has been evident. While the likes of CSK, GT, and RR have been composed, well-rounded bowling variety and comprising attacking batters, the bottom 4 of KKR, SRH, MI, and DC have lacked cohesion and consistency despite all of them boasting world-class match-winners.
Despite being in the undesired part of the points table, and not showing enough collective mettle, there have been a few good performers from the bottom 4 sides.
Here are 5 top performers from the bottom 4 teams in IPL 2023:
Rinku Singh
Rinku Singh has been the brightest spot so far for KKR as the left-hander has shown commendable consistency in his power-hitting. In 8 innings, Rinku Singh has cracked 251 runs at an average of 62 and strike rate of 158 with two fifties while remaining not out 4 times. His 5 sixes in 5 balls against Dayal are now part of IPL folklore.
Varun Chakravarthy
After a dip in his numbers last season, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has rocked back in form in IPL 2023. In the first 8 matches, Varun Chakravarthy has taken 13 wickets and is in the race for the Purple Cap – the most for a KKR bowler – and maintained a tidy economy of 8.05. 7 of those wickets have come against RCB.
Piyush Chawla
Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has, out of nowhere, turned up and dragged the Mumbai Indians to a better position than many would have thought they would be in an inexperienced bowling attack. The senior leggie has snapped 11 wickets – the highest for an MI bowler – in 8 outings at a brilliant economy of 7.11.
Axar Patel
The vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals for this season, Axar Patel, has stepped up and continued on his good form from international cricket into the IPL 2023. Barring Warner, the other DC batters have struggled to get going, Axar has rocked up and played big shots even on pitches where Warner, too, found it difficult.
In 7 matches, Axar, with the bat, averages 30 and has a strike rate of 135 with a best of 54. With the ball, he’s been as clinical as ever: 6 wickets at an economy of 7.04.
Mayank Markande
Leg-spinner Mayank Markande is having an impressive IPL 2023 season. After being on the bench for most of the past few seasons – only 6 matches over the last 4 seasons – he was trusted by the SRH management as their premier Indian leg-spinner.
Mayank Markande has picked up 8 wickets – most among SRH bowlers – in 5 matches this season so far while conceding at only 6.7 per over.
