Alejandro Gomez tested positive for terbutaline but claims he involuntarily ingested the banned substance as part of his son’s cough syrup.
Alejandro Gomez denied on Sunday that he has doped despite being banned for two years for failing a test while playing in Spain.
Monza attacker Gomez, who won the World Cup with Argentina and is also known as ‘Papu’, was banned on Friday for testing positive for terbutaline in October last year.
“Not only have I always rigorously respected all the rules, but I have also stood up as a strong defender of clean sport and sportsmanship, condemning categorically any forms of doping … I have never intended to, and I will never, resort to a banned practice,” Gomez wrote on Instagram.

Gomez, who signed for Monza as a free agent last month, was playing for Sevilla when tested.
He and Monza both claim that he involuntarily ingested the banned substance as part of his son’s cough syrup.
The 35-year-old added that there could be legal action as he believes that his case was not handled in accordance with regulations.
“The alleged offence originates from the presence of Terbutaline in my system, after I accidentally ingested it in a spoonful of my little son’s cough syrup … I have asked my lawyers to look into the matter as I believe the disciplinary case was not treated according to the rules,” Gomez added.
Gomez has spent most of his career in Italy, most notably at Atalanta, and played twice for Monza before being banned.
Terbutaline is used to treat asthma and bronchospasm caused by bronchitis or emphysema.
